Bats, Spiders, and Insects: Exploring the Nocturnal Wonders

Join us for an evening adventure at our Coyote Creek Field Station (CCFS) in North San Jose to explore the world of bats, spiders, and insects with two amazing scientists. David Johnston will set up his mist nets in Coyote Creek, lead a bat banding demo, and talk about the research he is doing to study and conserve bats. Participants will learn a lot about bat biology, and the species we hope to see include Yuma myotis, big brown bats, and possibly Mexican free-tailed bats. Merav VonShak will also lead the group in a tour of the area to discover orb spiders, mosquitos, and other interesting spiders and insects that live in this riparian habitat and will talk about the kinds of insects our local bats eat. Dr. David Johnston is a vertebrate ecologist who specializes in the study of bats. A well-known authority on bats of the west coast, David also has a vast knowledge of the natural history of vertebrates in California. He currently works as an Associate Ecologist at H.T. Harvey & Associates.​ Dr. Merav VonShak ​teaches natural history at San Jose State University and has organized BioBlitzes for Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful, Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, and other environmental organizations. She also volunteers in habitat restoration and environmental advocacy and loves teaching outdoors and exposing people to their local nature.
