Shining a Spotlight on the Coyote Creek Watershed

At this virtual presentation, you'll hear from panelists about segments of the Coyote Creek Watershed, including Coyote Valley citizen science, the Coyote Creek Field Station, the Singleton Crossing fish passage removal, and overall photos documenting the largest watershed in Santa Clara County.

Panelists are:

1. Ron Horii who will share photos to set the stage of Coyote Creek at various stages, from high water to drought levels, historical images and current, and the changes he's seen over the decades of enjoying the Coyote Creek Parkway. Ron is a volunteer with Santa Clara County Park and the Open Space Authority who loves riding his bike and taking photos of nature while learning and sharing the history of these wonderful places.

2. Katie LaBarbera will discuss the long history of the Coyote Creek Field Station where the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory manages this special place of land bird research using bird banding for 40 years. She'll share some of her research, and SFBBO's efforts with college students to learn about avian science. Katie is the science director at SFBBO and specializes in landbird research and conservation.

3. Jen Michelsen will discuss the Singleton Crossing Interim Bridge project just now starting construction to remove a fish passage impediment. Valley Water and the City of San Jose are jointly working on this project, and she will share some of the history of the project, the goals of the project, and next steps for a final crossing. Jen is an Associate Environmental Planner in the Watershed Stewardship and Planning department at Valley Water.

4. Merav Vonshak will share how citizen science through BioBlitz events and her own exploration of Coyote Creek's environs have yielded some exciting finds. She's explored the length of the watershed including the headwaters at Henry Coe State Park and Coyote Valley. Merav is the founder of BioBlitz.club where she leads citizen science events to explore nature.
